ASDMA adopts stratified approach to tackle floods

Guwahati, April 29: Ahead of the flood season, a stratified approach has been adopted by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) to tackle floods and boost preparedness in the state.

Under such an approach, flood preparedness has been divided into thematic groups such as coordination of response, relief camp management, ensuring continuity of services, critical infrastructure preparedness, risk communication, reporting and damage assessment.

In this regard, an all-stakeholder flood preparedness consultation was organised here on Monday in a bid to give a push to flood preparedness in the state.

More than 40 departments, state and central agencies took part in the meeting, which was a culmination of a series of thematic flood preparedness discussions.

Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, principal secretary, revenue and disaster management department and chief executive officer, ASDMA, chaired the meeting.

The coordination meeting took stock of the various action points for flood preparedness decided as part of the consultations by the various departments. Along with State Disaster Relief Fund norms, OMSS (open market sale scheme) rice distribution procedure for flood relief was also discussed.

As part of these efforts, consultations have been held with various departments such as power, education, PWD, etc., along with the department of telecom, fire and emergency services, NDRF and SDRF to spruce up the preparedness for response and recovery in their areas of responsibility.

Officials from NDRF, SDRF, fire and emergency services discussed measures for prompt response and recovery during the floods.

On the other hand, officials from NESAC and IMD apprised of the measures taken up for flood early warnings during the forthcoming monsoon season.

ASDMA has been holding with line departments, various state and central responding agencies connected with disaster preparedness, response and recovery before the onset of the flood season in the state.
