SHILLONG, April 28: The National People’s Party has predicted that the agenda of hate politics propagated by the Voice of the People Party will face a backlash in the long run.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Sunday, NPP working president and KHADC Chief Executive Member, Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that the type of politics which this new party (VPP) is advocating will ultimately lead to lawlessness.
“I don’t see this wave of hate politics lasting for long and it is going to fade away once people realize that the party is trying to create division among the different indigenous communities,” Syiem said.
The NPP working president also accused the VPP of trying to create division between the Christians and people following the indigenous faith.
He questioned the VPP for raising the issue of reservation and questioning the agreement of 40 per cent quota for the Khasis and Jaintias and 40 per cent for the Garos, which was decided upon by the former leaders of the state.
“I don’t think it is right to question this ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ of our past leaders who were responsible for our Statehood. We need to recognize and respect this agreement on the reservation policy,” Syiem stated.
He however admitted that the roster reservation system, once notified by the state government, should be implemented prospectively.
Syiem also questioned the VPP for making tall promises to the people.
“People are backing the party now since they are hoping for a change. The party is promising the heaven to the people by making tall promises which will never materialise,” he added.
Earlier, VPP dared the NPP to “walk the talk” and come up with any statement made by the regional party which is an indication of incitement against any community. “Let them find any statement where there is any indication of incitement against any community failing which they should offer apology to the people of the state for spreading a lie,” VPP had said.
