SHILLONG, April 29: UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh on Monday dismissed the current wave in favour of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and said it will fade away like flash floods.
Lyngdoh told The Shillong Times that he does not see the VPP replacing the UDP as the principal regional party in the state.
He said the UDP, which has survived the test of times, has no threat from a new political entity. “The UDP is like the river which flows constantly throughout all seasons. The wave of the VPP is just like flash floods. It comes, it sweeps and it disappears,” the UDP working president said.
Stating politics is a long distance race, Lyngdoh said the VPP is trying to run a 100-meter race.
“This is the difference. But I want to wish the VPP the very best. Let them try to sustain,” Lyngdoh said.
There are political observations that the VPP will pose a major threat to the UDP if the current wave persists. There is also anticipation that the VPP will take away a major chunk of the UDP votes in the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
