SHILLONG, May 1: The Mawkhar Dorbar Shnong is concerned that the Mechanised Multilevel Car Parking project at Jaiaw Taxi Stand, Motphran has hit roadblocks following opposition from the owner of a multistorey building located nearby.
The individual complained that his building was shaking when the contractor had started the drilling work for the foundation. Subsequently, the work was halted.
The members of the Executive Committee of Mawkhar Dorbar Shnong along with officials of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) inspected the site on Wednesday.
Later, Mawkhar Assistant Rangbah Shnong Ransom Sutnga told reporters that the Dorbar Shnong, which was involved with the project since the time it was conceptualised, does not want the work to stop. He said this is the Dorbar Shnong’s pet project.
Sutnga said they carried out the spot inspection to find out if the project poses any threat to the safety of nearby buildings. He said they discussed the complaint lodged by the individual with the engineers of the SMB.
According to him, there was a consensus that the work should not be affected since the project will help decongest the entire area. The deadline to complete the project is 12 months from the date of commencement of work.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 12.5 crore. It will have 115 car parking spaces across six automated levels with one entry and one exit point. The retrieval capacity will be a minimum of 23 cars per hour.
In the five-year operation and maintenance period, all expenditures, including electricity bills, will be borne by the contractor.
Sutnga said the work of another such project has already taken off at the office of District School Education Officer at Mawkhar. He said this seven-storey building will be able to accommodate around 85 vehicles.
