SHILLONG, May 3: The state government has chalked out a massive programme to decongest Shillong under phase 2.
The PWD land at Barik point is expected to be converted into a small park and parking space. A national flag will be hoisted there at a height of 40-50 meters on August 15.
Stating that unused government lands were transferred or shifted to the Urban Affairs department in the first phase and it created parking lots and tendered out some as in Polo, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “Continuing with that momentum, we have gone through the different processes of using more government properties to create more parking lots.”
He was talking to reporters after chairing the first meeting of the second phase. He said the government has plans to convert the PWD office at Barik point into a parking space.
Sangma said some areas in Hydari park will also be converted into a parking space once the government is able to shift the animals which will take about three to four months’ time. He said some other areas there will be expanded for the Shillong civil hospital.
The CM said work is in progress for the construction of quarters and office for the PWD officials in another location and the government expects to shift them by July. Subsequently, he added, the land in Barik point will be converted into a small park and parking space.
He said the government is working towards rationalising unused government lands, whether in Shillong or other parts of the state, in an efficient manner. A detailed presentation was made during the meeting.
“We do expect that when this happens, there will be much more open and parking space. The vehicles which are parked on the road will be parked in the parking space. It will help us expand the road,” Sangma said.
He said the government will also create footpaths from the Shillong club to the Governor House junction and Pinewood junction.
