SHILLONG, May 4: UDP leader and an environmental enthusiast, Jemino Mawthoh has made a call to action while pressing for collaboration and implementation of urgent measures to save the rivers in state from facing the same fate as Wah Umshyrpi and Wah Umkhrah.
Stating that there are about 49 river systems in the state, Mawthoh said, “If these rivers, located in rural areas, face a similar fate as Wah Umkhrah and Wah Umshyrpi, it is goodbye to the environment. That’s why we must unite and treat this issue as if we’re waging a war to protect and conserve our environment,” said Mawthoh.
He made these remarks while discussing various initiatives to save the dying Wah Umshyrpi and Wah Umkhrah, with no significant changes on the ground.
Recalling his earlier efforts through the Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS) to sensitise the public and conduct cleaning drives, he said, “It was a continuous effort I began as a youth leader with Operation Wah Umkhrah in 2000, and I’ve continued it as an MLA to raise awareness on establishing a waste disposal system in all localities.”
Asserting that this ongoing effort is aimed at safeguarding the environment, he added, “However, despite efforts from various groups and organisations, we haven’t witnessed substantial progress.”
He emphasised the need for an integrated solid waste management system, encompassing waste handling from households to transportation and disposal.
Additionally, he proposed alternatives and penalties for using low-density plastic bags, while urging the government to enforce regulations strictly. Discussing waste management, he highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue to prevent landfill overflow. He emphasized the importance of community involvement and comprehensive waste management, urging stakeholders and the government to coordinate efforts systematically.
