SHILLONG, May 10: Days after transporting two locals suffering from rabies from West Jaintia Hills to Shillong Civil Hospital, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Monday went an extra mile anew, disseminating awareness among the Indian nationals along the Indo-Bangladesh border on the prevention of the disease.
According to a statement here, the BSF on Thursday conducted an awareness programme that focused on the prevention of rabies and the identification of its subsequent symptoms.
Organised in Muktapur village of West Jaintia Hills, the programme was attended by the villagers, local BSF Coy Commander and Dr. Seiboklang Buam from Muktapur Veterinary Hospital.
“Their participation underscored the collaborative effort in addressing public health concerns and ensuring the well-being of the local communities residing in the bordering area,” the statement said.
During the programme, Dr. Prajwal from the Veterinary Department of Sector HQ Jowai educated the local community about the consequences of rabies and the essential measures for its prevention.
Dr. Prajwal also delivered a lecture, laying focus on the importance of timely vaccinations, responsible pet ownership and immediate medical attention in case of animal bites.
It is pertinent to note that only recently, two cases of rabies were reported in Muktapur bordering area.
Whilst one case was reported from the local bordering village Lakro Basti, the other was reported from Muktapur village.
Both were evacuated by BSF troops from the bordering area and were transported to the Shillong Civil Hospital in a BSF ambulance.
