SHILLONG, May 15: The state government has enlisted a specialised agency to take up the clean-up of the Rongkhon Songgital landfill in Tura, with plans to extend the contract to other locations upon successful completion.
“This was actually done mainly for Marten. After Marten, we asked the agency to do the clean-up of Rongkhon Songgital landfill site at the same rate,” revealed Chief Minsiter Conrad K Sangma.
The waste segregation machine installed at Rongkhon Songgital will employ various sorting methods to separate organic matter, plastics, metals, bricks, stones, and other materials. This process aims to maximise waste reuse and recycling, thereby addressing the legacy waste at the site.
“If we are successful, we will be happy to extend the contract to other locations,” Sangma added.
Exuding confidence in the agency’s capabilities, the chief minister cited its successful track record in other areas.
Sangma said the government anticipates significant changes within 12 to 18 months at the landfill site.
The agency, however, has assured the government that it might complete the task sooner.
Earlier, the chief minister inspected the installation of the waste segregation machine at the Rongkhon Songgital in Tura.
