India name squad for two women’s int’l friendly against Uzbekistan
New Delhi, May 27: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Monday announced a 23-member senior women’s squad for the two international friendly matches against Uzbekistan to be played in Tashkent on May 31 and June 4. Starting off with 30 probables, the Blue Tigresses trained at Sreenidi Deccan FC’s home ground in Hyderabad for two weeks, before head coach Langam Chaoba Devi pruned down the squad to 23. The Indian squad will travel to the Uzbek capital on Wednesday. Earlier this year, India had finished runners-up in the Turkish Women’s Cup, behind Kosovo, in a quadrangular tournament that also featured Estonia and Hong Kong. Women’s squad: Goalkeepers: Shreya Hooda, Maibam Linthoingambi Devi, Moirangthem Monalisha Devi. Defenders: Loitongbam Ashalata Devi, Sanju, Hemam Shilky Devi, Juli Kishan, Astam Oraon, Aruna Bag, Sorokhaibam Ranjana Chanu, Wangkhem Linthoingambi Devi. Midfielders: Karthika Angamuthu, Kaviya, Naorem Priyangka Devi, Neha, Sandhiya Ranganathan, Sangita Basfore, Soumya Guguloth, Anju Tamang. Forwards: Kajol D’Souza, Karishma Shirvoikar, Pyari Xaxa, Serto Lynda Kom. (PTI)

Subhankar tastes defeat in semis of Austrian Open
Graz (Austria), May 27: Indian shuttler Subhankar Dey lost in straight games to Indonesia’s Prahdiska Bagas Shujiwo in the semifinals of the Austrian Open International challenge here. The 30-year-old Indian, who had won the 2018 SaarLorLux Open Super 100, on Sunday suffered a 17-21 15-21 loss to Prahdiska in a 42-minute match at Raiffeisen Sportpark. Subhankar, who was a member of the Indian men’s team that won the bronze medal in the 2020 Badminton Asia team championship in Manila, looked in good touch this week. Men’s doubles pair of PS Ravikrishna and Akshan Shetty and Mixed doubles combination of Sanjai Srivatsa Dhanraj and Maneesha K suffered losses in the quarterfinals, while fifth seed Raghu Mariswamy and qualifier Tanishq Mamilla Palli lost in the second round in men’s and women’s singles.
