MAWKYRWAT, May 29: Kisen Wanniang, a 14-year-old boy from Mawlangwir village in South West Khasi Hills, was on Wednesday honoured by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) in recognition of his heroic act of rescuing three children from drowning at Maweitksar stream, located one kilometre from Mawkyrwat.
The felicitation ceremony was held at Kisen’s residence.
Speaking to media persons after Kisen’s felicitation, HYC Mawlangwir unit president, Rifulgent Wanniang, expressed his admiration for Kisen’s bravery.
“The HYC has no words to express its happiness over Kisen’s brave act. He is now the pride of our village and the Jaitbynriew as a whole,” he said.
Rifulgent also encouraged Kisen to continue his good deeds for the betterment of society and stay committed to his education to achieve more in life.
The HYC leader also urged the state government, through the district administration, to formally recognise Kisen’s bravery.
He also requested the Dorbar Shnong of Mawlangwir village to follow up on the matter with the district administration.
It may be mentioned that the incident occurred on May 25, 2024, around 10 am, when four children, under the age of 12, were swimming in the shallow waters of the Maweitksar stream at a spot known as Phot Lyngdoh. They, however, were suddenly swept into deep water.
Immediately after women washing clothes nearby screamed for help, Kisen immediately jumped into the water, rescuing three children.
The fourth child was saved by one Badeishisha Lyngdoh (32) and other women who threw a cloth to pull the child to safety.
All the rescued children, identified as Gidian Thongni (9), Naphisadona Thongni (11), Haphibansuk Thongni (10), and Carefully Thongni (12), hail from Mawlangwir village.
