SHILLONG, May 31: The state government will soon conduct a public hearing for acquiring around 200 acres of land for the new landfill site at Nonghalai near Diengpasoh in East Khasi Hills.
Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said the government will hold the public hearing following the completion of the necessary formalities to acquire the proposed land for the new landfill site.
It may be mentioned that the present landfill site at Marten has surpassed its lifespan and it may sustain for another two more years.
The Marten dumping ground is now overflowing, making it difficult for the SMB to handle the waste.
The SMB presently is limited to processing the waste since it cannot just dispose of the waste similar to what they were doing in the past.
Opened in 1938, Marten now awaits the commissioning of a bio-mining plant, which can potentially be a game-changer.
Meanwhile, the deputy chief minister also informed that they had floated a new expression of interest (EoI) for the new landfill in Jowai town.
He further informed that land to set up the new landfill for Tura has already been acquired.
