SHILLONG, May 31: The state government has submitted before the High Court of Meghalaya that the PIL pertaining to the perceived illegal procurement of vehicles by some officials of the Police department is not maintainable since it pertains to service matter and there is no need for keeping the PIL pending.
When the matter was taken up for hearing on Thursday , the state government, represented by Advocate General Amit Kumar, submitted that the documents sought for by the delinquent have already been furnished where some of the documents have already been annexed with the chargesheet and the proceedings may take further time.
The counsel appearing for the petitioners submitted that this Bench after going through various aspects entertained the writ petition for initiation of action against former Meghalaya Police officer GK Iangrai (seventh respondent) and that it is not pertaining to service matter alone but also with regard to the procurement of vehicles by the seventh respondent misusing his powers.
In order to enable the Advocate General to appear in person and address the matter, the Court was inclined to grant time.
“The pendency of this PIL shall not be a bar for continuation of the enquiry proceedings initiated pursuant to the orders of this Court and it is expected that the enquiry proceedings to be conducted without adjourning the matter beyond five working days at any point of time,” the Court said.
