SHILLONG, June 1: For years, travelling on the Jowai-Silchar highway has become time-consuming and risky because of frequent landslides and flash floods in the Sonapur and Lumshnong areas.
Every time it rains heavily in the state, the movement on the road that connects Meghalaya with other states gets snapped.
Vehicular movement was affected recently after flash floods in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal damaged the road. The movement resumed on Friday.
Asked about measures undertaken to deal with the recurrence of landslides, the East Jaintia Hills district officials said only the National Highways Authority of India, which maintains the road it constructed, can answer.
The state government recently instructed the East and West Jaintia Hills authorities to constitute district committees for acquiring land for the high-speed corridor to be constructed in the entire stretch of National Highway 6 from Umiam to Malidor.
Whether there will be a new alignment or the same road will be expanded is not known but frequent users of this highway are hoping for a solution to the flood and landslide problem, specifically in the Sonapur area.
The East Jaintia Hills district authorities have already constituted district committees and they are likely to meet after the counting of votes.
