SAM conducts 3rd Shillong Open Shooting Championship

SHILLONG, June 3: A total of 67 shooters participated – 45 rifle shooters and 22 pistol shooters –. 3rd Shillong Open Shooting Championship at the Meghalaya Police Shooting Club indoor shooting range at the Police Reserve, Shillong, on June 1-2, 2024. The competition, which was for Air Rifle and Air Pistol, was held in six category namely for sub youth 11-16, youth 16-18, Junior 18-21, Senior 21-45, Master 45-60, Para and Rifle and pistol from hearing and impaired category.
In a first, 8 athletes from the School & Centre for the Hearing Handicapped Children, Laitumkhrah also participated in the event.
President of Shooting Association of Meghalaya (SAM), John F Kharshiing, in his speech, thanked Davis NR Marak, IPS, Vice President, the Meghalaya Police Shooting Club for hosting the 3rd Shillong Open Shooting Championship, 2024 and stated that SAM has come a long way and today besides attracting more shooters the SAM has also been empowered with qualified NRAI jury members (Anjali singh, Davis NR Marak and John Thounaojam) and NRAI qualified coaches (Balarishisha Rani, Dennyson Kyrsain, Mawdaker Marwein, and Veronica Buhroi).
He stated that the vision of the Shooting Association of Meghalaya was to have its own integrated shooting range so as to provide opportunities for the talented pool of shooters from the state. He recalled the statement from a very senior Army official that “the best snipers in the Army come from the North East and if there is a proper fully integrated shooting range in Meghalaya there is possibility of producing world class shooters”.
