NONGPOH, June 5: A newly constructed house in Pahamrioh Them, Ri-Bhoi, was reduced to ashes in the early hours of Wednesday following a fire. Fortunately, no one sustained injuries, although the blaze resulted in the complete loss of belongings and property.
Sources indicate that the fire broke out around 3 am when neighbours were awakened by the crackling sounds of the flames. They quickly noticed the fire and sprang into action. A mentally ill person was reportedly sleeping inside the house at the time. But thanks to the swift response of the neighbours, who woke him up and escorted him to safety, he was unharmed.
The house belonged to one Aisila Kshiar, who was not present during the incident as she was staying at her workplace in Umling.
Kshiar’s mentally ill son was the sole occupant.
Kshiar was informed of the fire early in the morning and hurried back, only to find her home completely destroyed.
Pahamrioh village general secretary, Donroi Kshiar, stated that upon learning about the incident, he and other villagers immediately rushed to the scene. They attempted to extinguish the flames and simultaneously alerted the Fire and Emergency Services department from Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi, which arrived within three minutes. Despite their combined efforts, the fire consumed the entire house along with all possessions inside.
Later in the day, members of the HANM, Nongpoh Circle, led by its president Khrawpyrkhat Thongni, along with the organisation’s Ri-Bhoi unit president Donroi Kshiar and other members visited the site. They provided the victim with cooking utensils and essential commodities as part of their initiative to offer support.
