Panel identifies more than 700 eligible street vendors in city

SHILLONG, June 13: The Provisional Town Vending Committee has completed an extensive in-situ survey, identifying more than 700 eligible street vendors in areas under the jurisdiction of the Shillong Municipal Board. These vendors are now required to register and report to the chairperson of the Town Vending Committee.
The survey results revealed the distribution of street vendors across various locations in Shillong. The Motphran area has 32 identified vendors, while Khyndai Lad area has the highest concentration with 349 vendors. Jail Road has 99 vendors, and Iewduh has 66.
Additionally, GS Road hosts 128 registered vendors, Red Cross, Laban area has 4, Lachumiere has 1, Laitumkhrah has 27, Polo has 23, Barik Civil area has 25, Quinton Road has 3, Umsohsun has 2, and Governor House has 1.
The Meghalaya government has been planning to relocate registered hawkers from the Khyndai Lad area. Despite setting various timelines, the number of street vendors in the area continues to grow. The government aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Khyndai Lad by relocating approximately 200 hawkers engaged in various businesses.
