MAWKYRWAT, June 14: A total of six villages in Nongnam area of Riwar Sepngi, South West Khasi Hills, who had lost all hope of getting access to better road connectivity following the abandonment of the construction work by the contractor, are once again hopeful after a meeting that was held between Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L. Tongkhar and the landowners at Mawrap village on Friday.
It may be mentioned that the contractor had last year abandoned the construction of 19-km PMGSY road from Photjaud to Nongnam village in view of a conflict with landowners.
The villages that would have been connected following the successful completion of the Photjaud-Nongnam road were Mawkhyrwang, Nongnam, Mawbri, Lumpyngngad, Matangdeng and Mawsain.
With the landowners now giving the green light to the construction of the road, these villages are now hopeful of getting better road connectivity as 60 per cent of the work has already been completed.
The meeting was attended by Tongkhar, PWD officials, Myntris of different villages in Mawrap-Nongnam area, and the landowners affected by the road construction.
Speaking to media persons following the meeting, Tongkhar expressed his gratitude to the landowners for giving away their lands to construct the road.
Informing that the government has assured of retendering for the road project, he said, “This road will not only benefit the people of the six villages in the Nongnam area, but will also benefit the landowners from Mawrap who cultivate in the area.”
