SHILLONG, June 18: VPP MLA from Mawryngkneng Heaving Stone Kharpran has called for the establishment of police check posts at Diengpasoh and Mawryngkneng to address rising crime and illegal activities along the Shillong Bypass.
Speaking to a section of the press on Tuesday, Kharpran emphasised the need for police presence on the bypass to ensure the safety and security of travelers. He believes that the presence of police check posts will serve as a deterrent to petty criminals who target vehicles on this route.
Kharpran highlighted reports of truck robberies and drug peddling activities along the bypass. He also raised concerns about overloaded trucks and the dangers posed by speeding vehicles, which threaten pedestrian safety and have caused accidents.
The MLA announced his intention to meet with the Director General of Police (DGP) to discuss the urgent need for these check posts. He stressed that the police personnel assigned to these posts should prioritize the safety and security of citizens and refrain from engaging in illegal activities.
“I urge the government to take stringent action against any police personnel found involved in illegal collections,” Kharpran stated, underscoring the importance of integrity in law enforcement.
The call for police check posts comes amid growing concerns over the safety of the Shillong Bypass, which acts as a key route for transportation in the region.
