SHILLONG, June 20: Senior NPP leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Dr WR Kharlukhi, has filed an FIR against a YouTuber for accusing the state’s MPs of corruption in the implementation of the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).
“I filed the FIR this morning. I value my value-based politics, and this YouTuber tried to present me as corrupt. I have already filed a complaint with cybercrime not just for me but for all three MPs,” Kharlukhi stated, after showing the video on his mobile phone. He expressed concern over the portrayal, suggesting that the MPs were depicted as embezzling funds.
Kharlukhi explained the process of MPLADS implementation, noting that during the COVID-19 pandemic, funds were redirected to pandemic relief. He resumed receiving funds for MPLADS in 2022-2023, during which he recommended schemes to the nodal officer, who then forwarded them to district and block development officers. The funds were released in installments upon submission of utilisation certificates by beneficiaries.
In 2023-2024, the system changed, with the Parliament directly handling the scheme, eliminating the nodal officer’s role. “My 2023 scheme of Rs 5 crore is already finished, and the 2023-24 scheme has reached beneficiaries despite delays due to elections,” he noted.
Kharlukhi emphasised transparency, inviting anyone to verify his work through the village websites. He firmly stated, “If any village claims that the work was not done by them but by my people, I will resign that day.”
Addressing the corruption allegations, Kharlukhi declared his openness to any investigation and willingness to resign if proven guilty. He condemned social media, calling it a “negative vulture that feeds on negative carcass,” and expressed his frustration over the defamation. “I am transparent and have three bank accounts open to inspection and raids without prior information,” he added.
As he approaches retirement, Kharlukhi aims to clear his name from any allegations, reaffirming his commitment to integrity in politics.
