NONGPOH, June 26: The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed with fervour in Ri-Bhoi through a series of impactful events organised by the Meghalaya Aids Control Society (MACS) in collaboration with various local departments and organisations.
The day commenced with a spirited slogan march from NSCA Pahamsyiem to St. Paul’s Parish Hall in Nongpoh, featuring enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, NGOs, local headmen, and students from GNM Nursing School Pahamsyiem. This was followed by engaging Drawing and Painting competitions, Slogan and Essay contests, and a friendly football match between Shillong Lajong and Mawroh Sport & Cultural Club.
At St. Paul’s Parish Hall, an official program was held with Mayralborn Syiem, MLA, serving as the chief guest. Dr. (Mrs) B. Decruise, Project Director of MACS Shillong, J. Rabha, DSP, Dr. A.R. Marak, Additional DM&HO, and other dignitaries were present. The event drew participation from officers, students, and teachers alike.
Dr. Decruise delivered a keynote address highlighting the societal impact of drug abuse and detailed MACS’s initiatives in combating this issue. She underscored the correlation between drug addiction and the risk of HIV, revealing concerning statistics of 8,829 HIV-positive cases in Meghalaya, with 584 cases reported in Ri Bhoi District alone.
Mayralborn Syiem emphasised the day’s significance in raising awareness, particularly among adolescents, about the dangers of drug use. He called for heightened vigilance and cooperation from educational institutions, community leaders, and concerned departments to prevent drug abuse among school children. Syiem stressed the need for collective action towards achieving a drug-free society.
The event concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners of the Drawing and Painting competitions, Slogan and Essay contests, recognizing their contributions in promoting awareness against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
