SHILLONG, July 1: A highly decomposed body was discovered at Mawdum, Umiam, on Monday evening by local fishermen. The Rangbah Shnong of Mawdum informed the police about the body floating in Umiam Lake.
Local fishermen, with the assistance of the police, retrieved the body. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the identity of the deceased remains unknown. When asked if the body could be that of the missing 15-year-old from Nongmensong, police stated that identification was not possible at this stage.
Family members of the missing boy went to Civil Hospital, Shillong, in an attempt to identify the body but were unable to do so due to its condition.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday to aid in identification.
Police sources indicated that a DNA test might be conducted to confirm the identity and age of the deceased. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been searching for the 15-year-old boy since he was swept away by a flash flood on the evening of June 23.
