SHILLONG, July 6: Chief Secretary DP Wahlang has highlighted the urgent need for action against high tobacco consumption in Meghalaya.
Addressing a state-level observation of World No-Tobacco Day, he pointed out the alarming statistics, with 142 lakh cigarettes consumed daily, and emphasised the role of education in combatting tobacco use.
The event, which was organised by the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) under the Department of Health & Family Welfare, was aimed at promoting a tobacco-free Meghalaya.
Secretary of Health & Family Welfare and Mission Director of the National Health Mission, Ramkumar S, noted that despite being accorded recognition from the WHO, Meghalaya faces significant challenges, with rising tobacco-related deaths, particularly among adult males.
As part of the event, a music video of ‘My Meghalaya, Tobacco-Free Meghalaya’ was released to spread awareness and promote healthier lifestyles.
