Shillong, July 10: President Draupadi Murmu unveiled the prestigious Durand Cup trophies and flagged off the Trophy Tour for the tournament’s 133rd edition at a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan Cultural Centre on Wednesday.
In a historic moment for Indian sports, President Murmu, the First Citizen and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, continued a tradition initiated by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, by actively participating in the event.
In her remarks, President Murmu highlighted the global popularity of football and the heightened excitement when professional players perform before large crowds.
She extended her best wishes to all players participating in this year’s Durand Cup.Lt. Gen. Ram Chander Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, and patron of the tournament, expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is a huge honor for Indian football to have the President unveil the trophies and flag off the tour. This gesture reflects her deep respect for the Armed Forces’ traditions and legacy. We are committed to meeting the high expectations and thank the President for her grace.”
Notable attendees included Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri, actor and team owner John Abraham, and representatives from host state governments of Assam, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
Officials from the All India Football Federation, along with top management and sponsors like IndianOil, Coal India, State Bank of India, and Sony Sports Network, were also present.
The Durand Cup, established in 1888, is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious football tournaments, known for discovering talented players across the country.
The 132nd edition saw Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) clinch the title, defeating East Bengal Football Club (EBFC) 1-0 in the final, with Dimitri Petratos scoring the decisive goal.
