SHILLONG, July 11: Shillong Police “arrested” KSU Nongthymmai Circle president Eric Nongkynrih at around 1:30 am on Thursday in connection with the alleged assault of labourers during a work permit checking drive by the union.
Police, however, denied that they had arrested the KSU leader.
Nongkynrih told The Shillong Times that the police came to his residence to arrest him in the middle of the night.
According to him, the police failed to give any reason when he questioned them about his arrest.
He said that he was arrested at around 1.30 am and was taken to Sadar police station. He was released at around 3.30 am after several KSU leaders landed at the police station.
KSU Nongthymmai Circle vice president Richard Mawkhiew condemned the police for arresting Nongkynrih in the middle of the night as if he was a militant.
Mawkhiew made it clear that Nongkhlaw’s arrest would not deter the students’ body from continuing their drive of checking documents of migrant labourers.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had earlier informed that police have registered four cases in connection with the alleged assault of labourers and a technician who were engaged in the JN Stadium renovation work.
