Shillong, July 11: Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Sampath Kumar, on Thursday highlighted critical issues surrounding teenage pregnancy and early parenthood in the state whilst emphasising government’s commitment to building human capital.
Addressing a programme organised by the District Health Society of East Khasi Hills, Shillong, to mark the World Population Day here, Kumar noted the severe impact early pregnancy has on young women, often forcing them to abandon their dreams to cope with the demands of motherhood. “There is a significant need to understand the entire concept of birthing. A lot of awareness is required to ensure the health of both mother and child,” he said.
Chairman of the Meghalaya State Health Advisory Board, Mayralborn Syiem, who was the chief guest, underscored the importance of awareness about early parenthood.
He discussed the key issues that women face due to early pregnancies and pledged government support for initiatives aimed at uplifting women and addressing these challenges.
Syiem emphasised the need for a collective effort to devaluate the problem and provide comprehensive support to young mothers.
The event also featured a debate competition for students, followed by a panel discussion moderated by the founder of Grassroot Shillong, Mayfereen Ryntathiang. The panel included medical professionals, social workers, religious leaders, media personnel, and community leaders who discussed ‘The Role of the Father in Building the Household, Especially Related to the Health and Well-being of the Mother’.
The discussion raised questions about teenage pregnancy and the potential link between young parenthood and domestic violence. Panelists highlighted the need for increased awareness, particularly in rural communities, regarding childbirth and family planning issues.
