SHILLONG, July 12: Cherishing Meghalaya’s culture and the government’s efforts to turn geographical challenges into strengths, the 2nd Meghalaya Pineapple Festival, held at Dilli Haat, New Delhi, saw the participation of state’s Agriculture Minister, Dr Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, who highlighted the state’s commitment to promoting its unique produce, particularly Kew pineapples.
The festival, running from July 12, 2024, saw thousands of visitors enjoying the state’s pineapples. The government has invested significantly in infrastructure and working capital, leading to the export of pineapples to international markets and a domestic market reach of nearly 100 MT. These efforts have increased farmers’ incomes by up to 122%, benefiting over 5,000 farmers.
The state has also developed cooperative societies and marketing centers to support farmers and reduce middlemen influence. Future initiatives include processing units and partnerships to boost exports and improve logistics.
