The inspirational trajectory of Badap Hynniewta in the makeup industry weaves a perfect blend of classic and avant-garde techniques and boasts of artistry that is breaking beauty stereotypes, writes Esha Chaudhuri

A lot can be done with a stroke of a brush. Or hands. Or blenders. It does not matter which tool is used in the world of makeup, it’s the end result that matters. The notable shift between a before and after. The expanse of the makeup world and the industry is a massive one, offering bold, subtle, no-makeup appearances. With exposure and experience in one of the most demanding and competitive fields, Badap Hynniewta (40) with a rich career spanning over fifteen years; having collaborated with some of the esteemed names such as Javed Habib, and MAC Cosmetics, decided to turn a new leaf by opening BH Accentuate an academy for makeup and hairstyling in Laitumkhrah, Shillong. With the inauguration of the academy on July 12, Sunday Shillong set forth to have a one-on-one with the man of the hour.

A booming industry

While makeup is an external layer to a person, it is also of the essence that this ‘layer’ is of course a choice and by all means is to celebrate diversity and beauty. Emanating from a setpoint of vanity, the concept of smearing makeup has broadened and is viewed as a form of revered art. This is explained by the lofty numbers – according to a report by Statista, India is ranked fourth globally for generating the highest revenue from the beauty and personal care market in 2023 and in 2024, the revenue in the Cosmetics market in India is estimated to reach US$6.45bn.

Conversing with Hynniewta on his thoughts on the makeup industry, he shares, “The makeup industry today is thriving and constantly evolving. It’s fascinating to see how makeup has become not just a tool for enhancing appearance but also a form of self-expression and artistry. With the rise of social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube, makeup artists and beauty influencers have gained immense popularity, democratising beauty standards and inspiring creativity.”

On the ever evolving industry, and where does he see this heading, Hynniewta says, “The makeup industry has undergone significant changes. In the past, makeup artists typically worked behind closed doors, but now there’s a growing interest in knowing who is behind the celebrity’s makeup. Many makeup artists have transitioned into becoming makeup influencers. Moreover, makeup artists and hairstylists are no longer limited to bridal makeup; the industry has expanded to encompass various sectors such as film, prosthetics, body art, and more.”

However, there is a common notion where many associate makeup with vanity and have a dated gendered opinion. Asking Hynniewta what his views on this were, to which he commented, “Such a mindset can be problematic but we need to understand that makeup is a form of self-expression and creativity, and it should not be limited by outdated stereotypes or judgments.”

To change this perception, he suggests, “It’s crucial to promote the idea that makeup is for everyone, regardless of gender. This means celebrating diversity in beauty and challenging traditional notions of masculinity and femininity.”

Therefore, normalising usage of makeup for all, an inclusive approach and representation featuring men, non-binary individuals, and people of all ages, races, and backgrounds, as well as creating gender-neutral beauty products and marketing them in a way that is inclusive and welcoming to everyone has in a way helped foster a more inclusive beauty culture and a market.

Hynniewta believes that by advocating for inclusivity and embracing the idea that makeup is for everyone, we can create a more welcoming and supportive beauty community.

The Academy

Based on these ideals and principles, Hynniewta decided to relocate to his hometown, Shillong after 17 years of gathering learning and experience in India’s metropolitan cities of New Delhi and Bengaluru. In his words, “I woke up one day and felt a strong pull to come back to my beloved hometown and with the combination of experience and a longing to start something on my own I decided that it was the time to come back.”

Recently inaugurated, the space is designed with the primary purpose of education and instruction for learning makeup artistry but at the same time also equipped for grooming or makeovers. With immense faith in a positive outcome for the academy, given Shillong’s affinity for all things fashion, Hynniewta hinges on the novel experience that will come forth with his new venture.

“It is something that will be new in Shillong and not like any other basic training one can get in salons or academies. The courses are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of  makeup and hairstyling fundamentals, introducing them to essential tools, techniques and procedures.” states, Hynniewta.

Taking us through the different modules of learning, he elaborates, “Topics covered will include skin tones, face shapes, day makeup and simultaneously the hair design principles. Through hands-on learning, students will develop the skills necessary to analyse how makeup and hairstyling influence style and image in both fashion and culture. All tailored to individual clients and occasions.”

Sharing what future students can expect in terms of the outcome, Badap says, “The course aims to deepen students’ understanding of cultural influence on bridal aesthetics across different states and countries, fostering their ability to navigate diverse client preferences and norms, whether Indian or Western. Additionally, students will learn how to integrate functional makeup and hairstyling with complementary techniques such as styling, draping and lash application to create a variety of looks suited for bridal ensembles.”

Further, the courses are expected to be multifaceted as the students will have a range of makeup projects to work on from mastering a range of tools and techniques.

“Besides the Bridal, the courses will also focus on the art of special effects (SFX) makeup in the theater, equipping students to craft diverse character looks for professional settings such as film, television, media, and theater. These will encourage students to become industry-ready using this knowledge to create original, trend-setting styles.”

Present day trends

Much like the fashion industry, the makeup world too is fast paced and ever so fast in changing its trends. Naturally so, with fashion, the makeup that accentuates ‘the final look’ also diversifies and adapts with it.

Asking Hynniewta his thoughts on makeup trends including Instagram makeup trends, he says, “We should be adaptive with whatever is happening with trends but again religiously following it is not necessary. Trends are something that is sometimes created by one person and everyone loves it, so be free with makeup and try whatever suits you and then everyone starts to love it. Some trends may not suit you and some may become your holy grails. So follow whatever is good for you.”

Adding more insights to that, he says, “However, if one wants to remain up to date with the current beauty trends, staying in the loop is like keeping up with a fast-paced conversation that’s always changing. With new products, techniques, and styles popping up all the time, it’s important to stay in tune if you want to keep your beauty game strong.”

In the conversation, what couldn’t be given a miss was why more people are opting for a ‘no-makeup’ look these days. Hynniewta attributes the rise in popularity of the ‘no-makeup’ makeup look to several factors such as the emphasis on natural beauty that enhances one’s features subtly while still appearing fresh-faced and natural.

“The ‘no-makeup’ look offers a minimalist approach that requires minimal time and effort, making it ideal for busy lifestyles. This is popularised by celebrities and influencers often showcase the “no-makeup” look on social media platforms, normalising natural beauty and inspiring their followers to embrace their authentic selves.” observes, Hynniewta.

On the other end of the spectrum is using a bright colour palette. Hynniewta views it as an essential tool for bold statements and expression. “Using bright colours can be a fantastic way to add creativity, vibrancy, and personality to one’s look. They allow for endless possibilities in terms of experimentation and artistic expression.”

On asking the makeup artist three tips/hacks that he’d like to share with the readers, he answers, “Firstly, look for makeup products that serve multiple purposes to streamline your routine. For example, a tinted moisturiser with SPF combines hydration, coverage, and sun protection in one step. Similarly, a creamy lipstick can double as a blush, saving you time and space in your makeup bag. Secondly, keep blotting papers at hand to quickly absorb excess oil and shine throughout the day, especially in the T-zone. Lastly, using a customisable palette with one’s favourite eyeshadows, blushes, and highlighters helps mix and match shades to create custom looks, and it’s also convenient for travel or touch-ups on the go.”

Glamour on the go

For most who lead their lives on the move, and yet want to look their best, a quick dab of a few handy products always does the trick. This is true not only for commoners but also for celebrities. Having spearheaded makeup teams at prestigious events like Lakme India Fashion Week and Lotus India Fashion Week, contributing to the popular show on Netflix ‘Bollywood Wives’ as well as a clientele including personalities like Kalli Purie, Koel Puri, and Kalyani Chawla, we asked him what are the common makeup products that celebrities always carry? He answers, “Lipstick or Lip Balm which is essential for maintaining lip color and hydration, especially during long events or photo shoots. Mascara, to define and enhance eyelashes, making the eyes appear more awake and vibrant. It’s a must-have for many celebrities for quick touch-ups. Lastly, blotting papers because they are handy in removing excess oil and shine from the skin without disturbing makeup. They’re perfect for quick touch-ups on the go.”

To break the notion that the process of using and applying makeup can be time consuming, Hynniewta was asked what according to him are some quick styling tips for an instant glow and glam style?

“Without spending too much time, here are some quick styling tips – Instead of foundation, opt for a lightweight BB cream or tinted moisturizer. These products provide light coverage while evening out your skin tone and adding a subtle glow. Using a cream highlighter on the high points of one’s face gives a radiant glow, topping it with a statement lipstick, quick to apply mascara on the eyes and a cream blush for a peachy dewy finish. After the essentials, the eyebrow gel frames the face for an overall look and the setting spray helps in making the makeup last all day.”

By incorporating these quick styling tips into one’s routine, Hynniewta believes that one can achieve an instant glow and glam style in just a few minutes, perfect for those busy mornings or last-minute plans!

All in all, vanity or not, the makeup industry has instilled a cultural shift towards a feeling of being empowered, embracing one’s features and enhancing them. This, and more under Badap’s artistic finesse is nothing short of extraordinary.
