NONGSTOIN, July 14: Silchin R Sangma, a resident of Nengchigen in West Khasi Hills (WKH), has filed a police complaint against her father, Monen G Marak, after he allegedly destroyed her house following a disagreement over his new marriage.
According to an FIR filed in this regard at Shallang Police Station on July 12, Silchin said the conflict arose when Monen brought a new wife into the home after the death of her mother over two years ago. Silchin had insisted that her father get approval for the marriage from members of both clans: Ronding (his deceased wife’s clan) and Mongri (his new wife’s clan).
A meeting on July 7 at Silchin’s house with clan members resulted in the Mongri clan deciding to take back the new wife and warning Monen against future affairs.
The Ronding clan also decided that Monen would be sent back to his parents’ home for his actions.
Enraged by this decision, Monen threatened to kill his youngest daughter and subsequently dismantled her house.
“On July 9, he came to the house and threatened to kill me and asked me to leave the property. Fearful for my life, I fled. He then went ahead and destroyed my house completely. He also took away important things, including the papers to my mother’s rubber plantation, her election ID, her bank passbook, six dakmandas and three bundles of CGI sheets. The total losses, we have estimated will be about Rs 2 lakh,” stated the FIR by the daughter.
Meanwhile, Silchin has requested strict action against her father, stating that she now has no home, especially at a time when the region is reeling under monsoon rains.
