New Delhi, July17: Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is expected to participate in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka next month. According to a Cricbuzz report on Wednesday, July 17, the 37-year-old Rohit, who recently led India to an ICC trophy victory, “may make himself available” for the ODIs scheduled in August.
Although Rohit has retired from T20Is, he may shorten his vacation to join the team for the ODIs in Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7.
He is anticipated to inform the BCCI of his availability before the selection meeting, which is set to take place online on Wednesday.
If Rohit, who captained India to the ODI World Cup final last year, decides to play, he will lead the team. This development follows news that new head coach Gautam Gambhir wants key players like Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah to participate in the ODI series next month.
While Rohit may be included in the ODIs against Sri Lanka, it is unlikely that Kohli and Bumrah will feature in the three matches.
However, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will miss the ODI leg of the Sri Lanka series due to personal reasons.
If Rohit opts out of the ODIs, KL Rahul is likely to lead the side, as he did in the last ODI series against South Africa in December 2023. (Agencies)
