SHILLONG, July 20: The condition of roads in Shillong, apart from a few around key corridors, is rapidly deteriorating, with the ongoing rains aggravating the issue. Numerous potholes are emerging, making driving increasingly uncomfortable and hazardous.
These potholes, scattered across the city like craters, reveal the inadequacies of previous patchwork efforts, which the rains quickly undo. Local roads are particularly affected, with large potholes appearing after sharp bends, creating dangerous driving conditions.
Historically, such potholes have posed significant risks to residents, and the problem persists despite past incidents.
The rains also highlight Shillong’s inadequate drainage system, leading to waterlogged areas even with minimal rainfall. Notable examples include the Fourth Furlong-Nongmensong and Fire Brigade-Mawblei stretches.
Although repair work is expected to commence after the rainy season, its longevity remains uncertain. These issues are long-standing, yet little progress seems to have been made in addressing them. Citizens have long voiced their concerns, and social media reflects widespread frustration.
Ironically, when a VVIP is scheduled to visit the state, roads are quickly smoothed and potholes filled within two to three days, highlighting a glaring disparity in responsiveness.
