SHILLONG, July 22: VPP MLA from Mawryngkneng Heaving Stone Kharpran has called for the establishment of a police checkpoint along the Shillong Bypass to enhance the safety and security of nighttime travellers. After meeting DGP Idashisha Nongrang at the police headquarters on Monday, Kharpran emphasised the need for police presence in response to requests from Diengpasoh village residents.
Kharpran argued that the checkpoint would deter petty criminals from targeting vehicles on this route. “The presence of police personnel will ensure that people feel safe traveling through the Shillong Bypass,” he said.
Kharpran dismissed claims that residents opposed the checkpoint, stating that the safety of travellers is a priority.
The DGP assured Kharpran that steps would be taken to establish the checkpoint. However, due to immediate challenges, she committed to increasing police patrolling along the bypass in the interim.
Kharpran expressed confidence that increased patrolling would reduce theft and robbery incidents on this road.
Kharpran also requested the upgrade of the Mawdiangdiang police outpost, which the DGP agreed to examine.
In contrast, the Mawryngkneng Village Dorbar, led by Sordar Peter J Lawai, opposed the checkpoint proposal, citing previous traffic jams and public inconvenience caused by an earlier checkpoint.
Lawai suggested that the Police department should instead strengthen manpower at the Mawryngkneng Police Station, as current personnel are already overwhelmed with duties.
