NONGPOH, July 25: VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit expressed gratitude to the people of Ri-Bhoi for their overwhelming support in electing Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon as the new MP from Shillong parliamentary seat. This announcement was made at a gathering held at Iewmawlong on Thursday.
During his speech, Basaiawmoit highlighted the initial skepticism faced by the VPP from rival parties during the election campaign. “No one imagined, no one expected, there were other parties that mocked the VPP during the election campaign. They spoke as if this party would not achieve anything, but as days went by, with the progress we made, we realized that the people had turned their attention to us, the VPP,” he stated.
He emphasised the surprising success of the VPP, which secured over 370,000 votes, leaving major political parties in disbelief. This, he claimed, was a testament to the people’s support and the party’s growing influence.
Basaiawmoit reiterated the VPP’s commitment to addressing challenges and uniting the community, stating, “The VPP is not just a party that emerges to contest elections or reaches out to the people once every five years. Instead, it is a party that arises to address challenges and unite the community, working alongside the people regardless of whether they are Pnar, Khynriam, Bhoi, War, Maram, or Lyngngam.”
Looking ahead, he expressed hope that the VPP’s success in the recent election would continue into the upcoming MDC and MLA elections. “Before I depart from this world, I wish to see the community united as one, without any distinction based on tribe or religion,” he concluded.
The meeting was also attended by Mawlai MLA, Brightstarwell Marbaniang, and other party leaders from the state and Ri-Bhoi.
