Conrad slams Last Supper drag act in Paris

SHILLONG, July 28: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has condemned the drag act depicting the Last Supper during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024 on Friday for hurting Christian sentiments.
Sangma said he was deeply disappointed by the drag act. “Religious sentiments must be respected and I strongly condemn such act,” he said.
The segment which resembled the biblical scene of Jesus Christ sharing a last meal with his 12 apostles on the eve of his crucifixion and featured drag queens and a singer made up as the Greek God of wine, Dionysus, drew severe criticism from the Catholic Church and Christians across the globe.
The Paris Olympic 2024 organisers have apologised to Catholics and other Christian groups angered by a kitsch tableau in the Olympic Games opening ceremony that parodied Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting.
Following the backlash, a highlight reel of the opening ceremony posted to the official Olympics YouTube channel on Saturday was deleted.
The video, which had garnered over 7 lakh views, was made unavailable hours after it was uploaded.
