SHILLONG, July 29: The Nazareth Hospital Workers Union (NHWU) has expressed happiness and welcomed the recent judgment of the High Court of Meghalaya on equal pay for equal work.
In a statement on Monday, NHWU President Kenneth Swer congratulated the MeECL Progressive Workers Union (MPW) for their success in achieving this milestone after a prolonged legal battle for workers’ rights.
“Such achievement will only happen when the workers are united and be consistent in their struggle for just and fair treatment to workers in every sector,” Swer said.
Swer observed that the recent judgment by the High Court is a significant step towards achieving justice for workers in the state. He believes this paves the way for workers in every sector to begin discussions and negotiations with management or employers to implement the principle of equal pay for equal work.
He further expressed hope that the authorities in the Meghalaya Electric Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) will implement the High Court’s judgment within the specified time frame.
“We call upon all workers in the state to support each other and come together to fight for common issues like living wages, security in workplaces, better working conditions, and affordable healthcare and education for workers and their families,” Swer added.
