NONGPOH, July 30: A group of 10 passengers including a driver of a commercial vehicle had a miraculous escape on Tuesday evening along National Highway 6 near Jiva Restaurant in Nongpoh, as their vehicle overturned after being hit by a truck.
As per sources, the incident happened around 3 pm when both the commercial vehicle bearing registration number AS03 BC6621 and the truck bearing registration number ML05 Z6783 were heading towards Guwahati from Shillong. Upon reaching Umlyngkdait, near Jiva Restaurant, the speeding vehicle attempted to overtake the truck. However, due to other vehicles stopping ahead, it suddenly swerved towards the truck and was hit directly on its side, causing it to overturn.
This incident nearly escalated into a major confrontation and fight. The chaos began when a bystander at the scene forcibly pulled out and assaulted the truck driver without knowing the cause or who was at fault. This led the truck driver’s companions to react with anger and aggression. The truck driver, identified as Rajesh Marbaniang, had to shout, “Don’t fight, don’t fight.” The timely arrival of the police managed to contain the chaos.
All the passengers, including the driver of the commercial vehicle, sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment.
