Shillong, August 2: The Meghalaya government has amended the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020, to optimize efforts in checking the antecedents of migrant workers.

The state government will utilize the central system, Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS), to verify the antecedents of migrant workers and ensure that only those with no criminal records can join the workforce in Meghalaya.

The local police will also be able to verify the antecedents of migrant workers based on the data available in the CCTNS system. The Labour Department will coordinate with the police to record and register properly verified migrant workers.

The cabinet has also decided to enhance the penalty for violating the Act from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh per offender, and imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months for repeated offenders. The amendment aims to tighten the rules and regulations for inter-state migrant workers and ensure that they do not add to the crime graph of Meghalaya.
