SHILLONG, Aug 5: In the wake of the chaos beleaguering Bangladesh, around 280 nationals of the neighbouring country have entered the India territory in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region, according to the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC).
The Garo Hills-based organsiation has appealed that they be sent back after the end of the turmoil in Bangladesh.
Calling them “intruders”, the GSMC Central Executive Committee (CEC), Tura, submitted a letter to Commissioner of Division, Garo Hills Region, on behalf of the residents of Garo Hills, flagging the issue of “intruders from Bangladesh”. The Bangladeshi nationals allegedly entered Meghalaya illegally through the fragmented boundaries, and “would be subjugated to settle down within our geographical boundary,” it said.
The GSMC emphasised that their locations and hiding places must be investigated and addressed promptly. It further stated that every border checkpoint should be strictly monitored to prevent unwanted “intruders”.
Warning that untoward incidents may occur, the GSMC has called for action to monitor their activities.
“We trust that you will understand the gravity of the situation and give this urgent attention and intimation to insist them to move back to their native places at the earliest before anything iniquitous occurs in the area,” the GSMC said in its letter to the Commissioner of Division, while at the same time offering its cooperation.
A copy of the letter has been forwarded to each of the five Deputy Commissioners in West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills, North Garo Hills and East Garo Hills.
