SHILLONG, Aug 5: Venting ire over confusion with regard to mineral rules, the Association Hima Mylliem and Hima Khyrim of the Local Truck Owner and Driver Association, East Khasi Hills, on Monday, urged the state government to publicly clarify the provisions of the Meghalaya Mineral (Prevention of Illegal Mining, Transportation, and Storage) Rules, 2022.
Association president, Egenstar Kurkalang, addressed the media, highlighting the confusion and disruption caused by the government’s sudden implementation of the challan system. This has resulted in the seizure of trucks by the Forest and Environment department for non-compliance with the new rule.
“We are surprised since there was no clarification that trucks cannot transport sand and boulders without the challan,” said Kurkalang. As a result, truck owners have halted the transportation of boulders and sand.
A meeting has been scheduled for August 8 at Umphyrnai to discuss the provisions of the new rule and decide the further course of actions.
