MAWKYRWAT, Aug 6: After a viral video which showed a doctor and a woman arguing at Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawkyrwat Circle on Tuesday came down heavily on groups for allegedly escalating tensions. The incident, it added, has tarnished the hospital’s reputation and cast doubt on the district’s healthcare system.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday after meeting the Medical Superintendent of Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital, Dr M Lyngdoh, KSU Mawkyrwat Circle vice president Pulljohn Wanniang emphasised the Union’s commitment to advocating for necessary improvements in the health sector. Wanniang highlighted the KSU’s efforts to persuade the government to enhance hospital equipment, facilities, and staffing for the community’s benefit.
Expressing the Union’s dismay over the video’s rapid spread, which has undermined their ongoing campaign to improve district health centres, the KSU leader criticised certain pressure groups for adding aggravating the situation without considering the broader public welfare. Wanniang accused these groups of “pouring petrol into the fire,” worsening the situation over an issue that could have been resolved privately within the hospital.
The Union has called on the Medical Superintendent and hospital staff to swiftly address the issue, improve working conditions, and avoid using harsh language to prevent future incidents.
Sources revealed that the pediatrician involved in the incident has offered to resign but has been urged by senior doctors, stakeholders, and NGOs in the district to reconsider and continue his service at Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital.
