Shillong, August 9: As part of the celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, the North East Society for Agroecology Support (NESFAS) and Mei Ramew State Level Cooperative Society Limited (MRSLCSL) launched the ‘Mei Ramew Cooperatives’ at the head office of NESFAS in Laitumkhrah.
On the occasion, Mei Ramew Farmers’ Market will also be hosted at the same venue, featuring participation from our Primary Cooperative members.
While addressing the gathering after the formal launch of the ‘Mei Ramew Cooperatives, Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies, RN Rymbai stressed that they would like to see that the democratic set up of this society is strong to ensure participation of each and every member in the activities of the cooperative society.
According to him, it is very critical that as shareholders they should have a voice and are able to take part in the affairs to ensure the smooth functioning of the society..
“It will not be a healthy trend if a few members control the affairs of the society. We have seen and witnessed that many of the cooperatives could not survive if the powers are bestowed only on a few people,” Rymbai said.
Pointing out that the starting point might be great, he however said that what is more important is to ensure that the ending point should be far greater.
“What we would like to see there should be a democratic control in running of the affairs of the society,” he said.
