Seven state MLAs attend legislative summit in the US

SHILLONG, Aug 12: Seven legislators from Meghalaya attended the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Legislative Summit 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA recently.
Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma, AL Hek, Marcuise N Marak, Charles Pyngrope, Mohammed Mizanur Rahman Kazi, Rupert Momin and Wailadmiki Shylla were part of the delegation of 50 legislators from the country at the summit was part of a 50-member Indian delegation that included legislators, MLCs, and speakers from various states.
The visit was organised in collaboration with the National Legislators’ Conference Bharat, an initiative led by Rahul V Karad.
The summit brought together prominent Indian legislators, including Assembly speakers AN Shamseer (Kerala), UT Khader Fareed (Karnataka), Kultar Singh Sandhwan (Punjab) and Thomas A Sangma (Meghalaya) among others.
Their participation provided a broad spectrum of perspectives on global legislative practices.
The delegation visited the Kentucky State Capitol Building and gained insights into the legislative processes of various US states.
The summit featured sessions on education, artificial intelligence, workforce development, voter confidence and cybersecurity. These sessions allowed the participants to exchange ideas on pressing state issues and learn from the best practices in governance.
Karad, also the Executive President of MIT-WPU, highlighted the importance of the summit in strengthening global legislative ties.
“Our participation in this summit has not only enriched our understanding of diverse governance practices but also reaffirmed our commitment to enhancing democratic institutions in India,” Karad said.
The summit served as a platform for fostering international legislative cooperation with a focus on policy development and exchange of ideas. The event underscored the significance of collaboration in addressing contemporary legislative challenges and opportunities.
