I-Day 2024: MHA selects two cops from Meghalaya for service medals
SHILLONG, Aug 14: Two police personnel from Meghalaya have been selected by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for service medals in recognition of their meritorious service. The duo is among 1,037 other police personnel of various central and state forces, who have been selected for service medals on the occasion of Independence Day. The two personnel from Meghalaya who are to receive the service medals are Assistant Inspector General Sacheng R Marak and Havildar Anil Kumar Singh. It may be noted that the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) is awarded for special distinguished record in service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) is awarded for valuable service characterised by resource and devotion to duty.

NEIGRIHMS community condemns Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder
SHILLONG, Aug 14: Faculty members, residents, and students of NEIGRIHMS gathered on Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil to protest the brutal rape and murder of a 2nd-year postgraduate student from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The peaceful demonstration was organised to express solidarity with the victim and to call for stronger protections for healthcare workers. Head of the Ophthalmology department and president of the Faculty Association, Dr Tanie Natung, opened the vigil with an address emphasising the urgent need for a central healthcare protection bill. Dr Natung highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by healthcare professionals and the importance of safeguarding them. Echoing this sentiment, Dr Suvamoy Chakraborty, Head of the ENT Department, condemned the horrific crime and called for severe punishment for those responsible. The event also saw emotional speeches from Dr Pritisha and Dr Samapti, who spoke on behalf of the postgraduate students and interns, respectively. In his closing remarks, Dr C Daniala, the medical superintendent, expressed gratitude to all who participated in the vigil despite their demanding schedules, reinforcing the collective stance against such heinous acts. Representatives from the postgraduate student body, Dr Himraj and Dr Lokesh, along with Arihant from the student council, also addressed the gathering. They urged the public and society to recognise the challenges doctors face and to help create a safer and more supportive environment for healthcare professionals to perform their duties.
