100-foot, 50-foot national flags to be hoisted in Assembly complex at PB
SHILLONG/TURA/MAWKYRWAT, Aug 14: As Meghalaya prepares to celebrate Independence Day, Shillong is bedecked with illuminated buildings while its streets are adorned with national flags. Government offices and installations throughout the city are brightly lit, while various organisations have planned bike rallies, flag marches, and cultural programmes.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will lead the official programme at Polo Ground, with similar events taking place across the state’s district headquarters and civil subdivisions.
One of the key highlights will be the installation and hoisting of a 100-foot and a 50-foot national flags at the Assembly complex in Police Bazar.
Security has been tightened across the city, with police personnel deployed at various locations to ensure a smooth celebration. The central government’s “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign has gained significant momentum in Shillong, with vendors reporting brisk sales of national flags. Residents have been seen displaying the tricolor on vehicles, homes, and two-wheelers. A rally featuring a massive 77-meter-long national flag is also being planned.

The BJP has actively participated in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, organising Tricolour marches and bike rallies across the state.
The party’s Mahila Morcha team and youth wing paid tribute to Meghalaya’s freedom fighters, with citizens enthusiastically embracing the Prime Minister’s call to unfurl the national flag in every corner of the state.
I-Day Run at Mawkyrwat
In Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, the District Sports Officer, in collaboration with the district administration, organised an Independence Day Run as part of the 78th Independence Day celebrations. The event, flagged off by Deputy Commissioner Barnari Mawlong, saw over 300 participants, including men, women, and children, running through various villages before concluding at Circuit House, Laitlawsang.
Mawlong praised the district’s passion for running and encouraged participants to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.
Freedom Run in SGH
Similarly, in South Garo Hills, the district administration and District Sports Office Baghmara held an ‘Open to All Freedom Run’ at Baghmara. Deputy Commissioner PR Marak flagged off the event, which featured categories for different age groups. Dense Prasand S Marak emerged as the winner in the 10km category, while Mima R Marak claimed the women’s title.
In the under-12 category, Pyarseng S Marak and Urua M Sangma took top honours. The youngest participant, Agape R Marak, received a consolation prize, with winners earning cash prizes for their achievements.
