SHILLONG, Aug 16: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday extended the hand of friendship to Congress MLA from Mawhati, Charles Marngar, virtually inviting the latter to join the ruling NPP with the promise of approving a proposal for creation of a new Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block in Mawhati, besides providing substantial funds for setting up of schools and construction of a road under the World Bank project.
Sangma made the assurance to a delegation of leaders from Mawhati constituency led by Marngar who had met him at his residence here.
This development comes just hours before Marngar was suspended from the Congress for six years for “anti-party activities”.
After meeting the delegation, the chief minister said villages falling under Mawhati constituency are currently attached with Bhoirymbong and Umsning C&RD Blocks and villagers had to travel around 80 km if they had any work in these two blocks.
“We will start the process for sanctioning of the new C&RD Block so that people can get better service and access to the different schemes of the government,” the chief minister said.
He further mentioned that the delegation’s demand for construction of the Sonidan-Umsiang Road to boost connectivity in the constituency will be fulfilled under the new World Bank sanctioned project.
He also informed that he has assured to sanction Rs 8 lakh each through the Chief Minister’s Development Fund (CMDF) to set up schools in eight villages lacking them in the constituency.
“Mawhati constituency has been neglected in the past. A lot needs to be done and with the active role of the local MLA, we will see much more development in the constituency,” the chief minister added.
