SHILLONG, Aug 16: Mawlyndep village of Ri-Bhoi has been accorded recognition for its exceptional efforts in initiating the ‘Clean Umiam Campaign’, an awareness-cum-public cleaning drive programme aimed at addressing the problem of water pollution and conservation of environment.
The ‘Certificate of Recognition’ was handed over to the Mawlyndep Dorbar Shnong by the Office of the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Ri-Bhoi, on Thursday.
The recognition was awarded by Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs Shakliar Warjri, in the presence of Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal and Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa.
The award was received by members of the Dorbar Shnong Mawlyndep, including Jinu Kharbuki (headman), Hubert Kharpan (secretary) and Donald Rani (treasurer).
It may be mentioned that the Clean Umiam Campaign was supported by the Meghalaya Institute of Governance (MIG) and co-organised by villages surrounding Umiam Lake, including Umbir, Umsawkhwan, Umiam, Umniuh Khwan, Mawdun and Nongpathaw.
The campaign was further strengthened through collaboration with Union Christian College, Operation Clean-Up, and Jiva Cares.
It is pertinent to note that Mawlyndep village has been at the forefront in efforts to clean up the Umiam Lake and has been concerned about the dumping of garbage into the lake.
