Kidnappers narrowly escape police trap in Dudhnoi

Tura/Dudhnoi, Aug 18: A group of kidnappers, who had kidnapped a building constructor from Tura, had a narrow escape after police accosted them in Dudhnoi on Sunday.
According to sources, one person from Assam was kidnapped on August 10 and was initially passed off as many thought the victim had gone along with his friends. Police were however alerted after the family members filed a police complaint after they began to receive ransom calls from the gang.
The case took a positive turn after the victim managed to escape the gang and reported to the Boko PS in Assam.
“His hands and legs were tied and he was thrown into a pond to die. He however managed to save himself and landed at the Boko PS. Although the kidnappers thought the victim was killed, trying to take advantage of the situation, they continued their ransom calls, so we set a trap for them,” said a police source.
The police lured the gang to come to Dudhnoi to take the ransom after they tried to persuade the team to come to Dhupdhara. When they agreed, a time was set to deliver the money and in conjunction with Assam police, North and West Garo Hills police, a team in plain clothes waited for the gang members to show up.
However, when the criminals arrived near the Meghalaya Bus Stand in Dudhnoi, they sensed police presence and before the team could react made a break for it.
To nab the group, three controlled shots were fired by the team following which the kidnappers abandoned their two-wheeler and taking advantage of the huge crowd, fled.
“As the area is busy we could not do much as it could lead to an untoward situation. However, we now have clues as to who they could be and we are hopeful of a breakthrough soon,” informed Superintendent of Police, WGH Abraham T Sangma.
