No double standards, can’t swim alongside BJP: MPCC

SHILLONG, Aug 18: The Congress will not swim alongside the BJP, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has reiterated.
The Congress’ decision to suspend MLAs Charles Marngar (Mawhati) and Gabriel Wahlang (Nongstoin) for six years was “based on recent reports from the Block Committee and Frontal Organization which indicated their association with the MDA government”.
The BJP is an ally of the National People’s Party (NPP) and component of the MDA.
Prior to their suspension, there were media reports that Marngar and Wahlang have plans to join the NPP and work for the development of their constituencies.
People wonder why the Congress should take action against the duo when the party is working together with the NPP in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). They viewed it as “double standards”.
The MPCC sought to set it right on Sunday. It said the Congress has no problem working with the NPP in the KHADC since there is no BJP there but cannot support the MDA government since the BJP is one of its constituents.
The Congress had six MDCs in the KHADC. Two of them – Carness Sohshang and Batskhem Ryntathiang – have since left the party and joined the NPP.
The remaining four others are Ronnie V Lyngdoh, Pynshngain N Syiem besides the suspended duo – Marngar and Wahlang.
State Congress chief Vincent H Pala said the party is working with the NPP in the KHADC to clean up the entire system. He added that many had objected to the decision of this cohesion.
