Fresh traffic regulation for Durand Cup match in city

SHILLONG, Aug 19: In view of the upcoming Durand Cup 2024 quarterfinal football match between Shillong Lajong FC and East Bengal FC, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has announced a series of traffic regulations to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety for all attendees. The match will take place at the JN Stadium, Polo Ground, for August 21.
From 4 pm on the day, entry will not be allowed from Lumjingshai Junction towards CRPF Junction. No Entry for Lumjingshai Junction towards Forest Colony has also been notified. These vehicles will be diverted towards Lawmali Junction and beyond.
From 5:30 pm onwards, there will be no entry from 4th Furlong Junction towards Polo Market and vehicles will be diverted towards CS Junction and beyond. Vehicles will also be barred entry from Ganesh Das Hospital Junction and Lawmali Junction towards Polo Market. They will be diverted towards Lumjingshai, Jingthangbriew, and Jaiaw.
The STP has also notified no entry for Heavy Motor Vehicles from FCI Junction to Lumjingshai, except for buses ferrying football supporters. These vehicles will be diverted towards Mawroh Junction, Golflink Tri-Junction, and beyond.
No right turn from Matri Mandir Junction towards Polo Market will be allowed. Vehicles will be diverted towards 4th Furlong Junction and beyond.
Additionally, parking around the Polo area will be strictly prohibited from 1 pm until the match concludes. Commuters from Mawlai heading towards Police Bazaar have been advised to use alternative routes via Mawroh, Golf Links, Jaiaw, or Highway Mawlai Point from 4 pm onwards.
Roadside parking from Golf Club to CRPF Junction is not allowed; residents have been urged to avoid parking in this stretch.
The movement of loaded heavy vehicles around Polo will be prohibited from 8 am to 10 pm on August 21.
The STP has encouraged the general public to use carpooling or shared taxis to reduce traffic congestion that day, while it has asked football supporters attending the match at JN Complex to arrive early to avoid delays.
Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in Polo area from 4 pm on match day.
However, emergency vehicles and those transporting sick individuals are exempt from these restrictions.
