SHILLONG, Aug 20: The KHADC Select Committee will sit on Wednesday to hear and dispose of various petitions opposing the recommendations of the Delimitation Committee in its report on the readjustment of the 29 existing constituencies.
The Select Committee received at least 10 petitions, including from villages and localities primarily across the constituencies in West Khasi Hills and East Khasi Hills.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting of the Select Committee on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Executive Member and the panel’s chairman, PN Syiem admitted that it is difficult to satisfy everyone.
“We will have our final meeting on Wednesday before we decide how to proceed,” he said.
He said the panel would abide by the voices of the people and the traditional heads on the proposal to readjust the 29 existing constituencies.“We cannot go against the people,” he said.
Syiem further said some villages submitted their petitions to the committee to remain in the same constituency and not be attached to another post-delimitation. “Very few villages want to be added to a new constituency,” he said.
He said they heard many of the petitions during Tuesday’s meeting and the remaining would be heard on Wednesday.
“We will try our best to accommodate their views. But at the same time, we want the number of voters in each constituency to be almost the same,” Syiem said.
Senior MDC, Bindo Mathew Lanong and Leader of the Opposition, Titosstarwell Chyne attended the meeting as members of the Select Committee.
