SHILLONG, Aug 25: “One of the most beautiful bridges” is set to be built, which will connect Umpling with Nongrim Hills. The Public Works Department (PWD) has approved a proposal to construct an iconic bridge over Wah Kaliar, aimed at connecting Umpling with MES, Nongrim Hills. The project, which will be funded through a World Bank loan, marks a significant infrastructure development in the region.
KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem, who is also the MDC of Sohryngkham, conducted an inspection of the proposed project site on Friday. The inspection was attended by PWD officials, a World Bank consultant, representatives from the Umpling Dorbar Shnong led by Rangbah Shnong SF Pyngrope, and representatives from Nongrim Hills Dorbar Shnong, along with local residents.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Sunday, Syiem revealed that this bridge will be the first project to be executed under the Rs 2,000 crore World Bank loan recently approved by the Union Ministry of Finance. He also confirmed that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, have prioritised this project.
The proposed bridge will span 300 metres in length and will have a width of 5.50 metres, with footpaths on both sides for pedestrian access. The design of the bridge is expected to be similar to the Wahrew bridge, featuring a distinct arc across the first and second landing over Wah Kaliar.
While the project was initially estimated to cost Rs 70 crore in 2021, Syiem mentioned that PWD (Roads) will reassess the project cost. The implementation will be handled by the PWD Shillong Central Division, with the PWD and World Bank consultant scheduled to conduct a final survey in the near future.
Syiem highlighted the significant benefits the new bridge will bring to commuters, particularly by easing traffic congestion during peak hours, especially during school hours. The bridge will provide a more direct route for residents of Umpling and surrounding areas, eliminating the need to pass through Rynjah market to reach Laitumkhrah.
“This will be one of the most beautiful bridges in Shillong,” Syiem remarked, expressing optimism about the project’s positive impact on the city’s infrastructure and daily commute.
